Cape Town - Springbok and Blue Bulls prop Lizo Gqoboka has been linked with a short-term move to French Top 14 club Montpellier.

According to SA Rugbymag, Gqoboka will join the club for the duration of this year's Rugby World Cup.

The 29-year-old had an outstanding 2019 Super Rugby season with the Bulls and was subsequently rewarded with two Springbok caps - against Australia in Johannesburg and Argentina in Pretoria.

But Gqoboka was overlooked when the Springboks' World Cup squad was announced on Monday, so will gain some valuable game time in France instead.

He could still be called up as an injury replacement at the World Cup.

The deal is similar to the one confirmed on Monday for Springbok and Western Province prop Wilco Louw, who also missed the cut for South Africa's World Cup squad.

French giants Toulon announced via a press statement on Monday that Louw had signed as a 'medical joker' for the duration of the World Cup.

A medical joker is a common term in French rugby for a player who joins a club as an injury replacement on a short-term basis.
