Springbok head coach Jacques Nienaber, yet to oversee a Test match after almost eight months in the post, faces a dilemma of considerable magnitude over how to shape his plans in the critical flyhalf berth for the short to medium term.

That need happened very suddenly and cruelly when Handre Pollard, long-time premier occupant of the jersey and essential to the world champions' recent playing formula, tore a dreaded anterior cruciate ligament in a knee while playing for Montpellier a few days ago.

The inevitable confirmation by the French outfit that he will be out for "many months" would have given additional cause for concern to long-time Pollard-watchers, mindful of how noticeably long it took the strongly-built pivot to get his fullest mojo back after a very similar setback in February 2016.
