Brent Russell evades Breyton Paulse during a Springbok Trials match at Loftus Versveld in Pretoria on 19 May 2002.

The explosion onto the scene of Brent Russell more than 18 years ago should be incentive enough for a rookie or two to rocket dramatically up the Springbok pecking order when the "trial game" of sorts is played at Newlands on Saturday.

Match-day line-ups for the draft-chosen Teams "Green" and "Gold", to be coached by Mzwandile Stick and Deon Davids respectively, were to be revealed later on Wednesday, although it is already known that abundant young players still relatively low on first-class experience will get a tasty opportunity to impress SA director of rugby Rassie Erasmus and new national coach Jacques Nienaber.

This is less obviously a conventional Bok trial in make-up than the last time one was played (they were once much more de rigueur) at the outset of Rudolf Straeuli's turbulent coaching tenure in 2002.
