Cape Town - The Springboks face an anxious wait over the fitness of the only two specialist No 8s in the current squad - Duane Vermeulen and Warren Whiteley.

As it happened: Springboks v Ireland, second Test

Both players sustained injuries in the Springboks' remarkable come-from-behind 32-26 victory over Ireland at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Boks, who had a first 60 minutes to forget, scored four second half tries to square their three-Test series at 1-1, after the Irish made history with their first ever win in South Africa (26-20) at Newlands in Cape Town last weekend.

Vermeulen, called into the squad from his French Top 14 club Toulon as one of three overseas-based players, injured his elbow early in the match.

He soldiered on, but was replaced at half-time by Lions skipper Whiteley, who in turn took a knock to his shoulder in a stand-out second 40 minute showing, during which he scored a crucial try.

At the post-match press conference, coach Allister Coetzee confirmed that both players are injury concerns ahead of the third and final Test in Port Elizabeth next Saturday (kick-off at 17:00) and will be assessed further over the next two days.
