Former Springbok coach Nick Mallett once suggested that Cheslin Kolbe ought to switch from outside back to scrumhalf to have a chance of becoming a Springbok.

Size doubts weren’t new to Kolbe, who faced questions about what he could achieve on the rugby field purely based on his diminutive disposition.

Despite a lengthening tally of players who proved capable of mixing it up with the big boys – cue Gio Aplon and Breyton Paulse – as well as Kolbe’s undeniable talents, a place in the Bok team was never a given.
