The best New Zealand flyhalf of all time? Best New Zealand player of all time? Best rugby player of all time, even?

All of those are highly plausible arguments in favour of Dan Carter, the All Black legend who bowed out of the game, aged almost 39, a few days ago.

It has been a glittering career for the versatile player – almost equally adept at inside centre, though best renowned at No 10 – both as playmaker extraordinaire and formidable accumulator of international and first-class points.
