Just what will the proportion of players drawn from overseas clubs be if a Springbok squad does eventually travel to the intended 2020 Rugby Championship in Australia?

That is a matter open to significant conjecture even as director of rugby Rassie Erasmus and Bok head coach Jacques Nienaber unveiled an unusually expansive initial party of 93 strictly home-based players for draft picking for the "Springbok Showdown" trial exercise at Newlands on 3 October.

It may not have been lost on some astute rugby observers that, around the same time as the gargantuan list was revealed live in a special SuperSport presentation - featuring both Erasmus and Nienaber - on Saturday, several South African players campaigning in northern climes strutted their stuff impressively in high-level Euro competitions.
