Cheetahs huff and puff ... and get thumped

Cape Town - The Cheetahs put in a honest 80 minute performance, but were ultimately outclassed by the defending champion Hurricanes in their Super Rugby clash in Wellington on Saturday.

As it happened: Hurricanes v Cheetahs

The Hurricanes won 61-7 after leading 21-7 at half-time.

The Hurricanes scored nine tries through lock Vaea Fifita, centre Vince Aso (3), wing Julian Savea, scrumhalf TJ Perenara, prop Jeff To'omaga-Allen and replacements, back Ben Lam and hooker Leni Apisai.

Fullback Beauden Barrett was on target with five conversions, while flyhalf Otere Black added three others as the Hurricanes' kickers enjoyed a good night from the kicking tee.

The Cheetahs replied with a solitary try and conversion by pivot Fred Zeilinga midway through the first half.

The Hurricanes picked up a full-house of five points and crucially moved ahead of the Chiefs into second place in the New Zealand Conference.

The Cheetahs left empty-handed and stayed third in the Africa Conference 1, with the result doing little to aid them in their bid for Super Rugby survival next season.

In next weekend's Round 14 action the Hurricanes travel to Pretoria to face the Bulls (Saturday, May 27 at 15:05), while the Cheetahs' tour continues with a match against the Sunwolves in Tokyo earlier in the day (07:15 SA time).
