Ahead of the 2020 Super Rugby season, a strong narrative at the Stormers centred around this being the union's farewell season at Newlands - the oldest and one of the most iconic major rugby venues in South Africa. 

From 2021, Western Province would relocate to Cape Town Stadium. 

Saying an appropriate 'goodbye' to the 'grand old lady of South African rugby', Stormers coach John Dobson said, was a massive motivating factor for his players.
