Sunday rugby: if memory serves me correctly, the Lions have done it a couple of times in recent seasons at Ellis Park, though I can’t think of too many further cases in South Africa.

But the crowd-pulling success of Super Rugby Aotearoa games on that day - and more specifically in an afternoon kick-off slot - should get the bosses at SA Rugby thinking a bit.

Helped admittedly by the fact that it was the game likely to seal the title for them (duly achieved), the Crusaders drew a capacity home crowd in spring-like sunshine to their Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch on Sunday for the visit of the Highlanders in another captivating contest.
