Ivan Venter wasn't supposed to be part of club rugby's grand return to national television when Pretoria's Harlequins hosted Green Side's Pirates in last weekend's inaugural Supa Cup.

He and a few friends were supposed to have embarked on a walking tour that got cancelled at the eleventh hour.

Fate, it would seem, had a different plan for the 31-year-old utility back - one so full of heartening symbolism that it couldn't have been scripted better.
