South African franchise rugby's new chapter commences on Friday evening when the Lions and Italian side Zebre kick off the United Rugby Championship in Parma.

It's a culmination of years of debate over whether the local game would be better served by joining European clubs, instead of having to cope with the inherent disadvantage of having to travel various time zones to play Down Under.

The SA teams have all expressed their excitement over the new venture, but will it translate into success?
