There is an ongoing sense of optimism among South African pundits about the Stormers’ stealthy progress in the United Rugby Championship.

It has been desperately tight among the “big three” domestic franchises in the upper reaches of the 16-team table as we negotiate the final round of ordinary season this weekend ... but the multi-layered brand of rugby John Dobson’s charges are playing has earned them stronger kudos that most compatriots at this point.

The Capetonians also have the advantage, in some senses, of featuring in the last SA-relevant fixture of the roster - against Scarlets in Llanelli later on Saturday, 18:10 our time - so with a clearer picture by then of what they need to do to try to tee up a home quarter-final.
