Cape Town - WP Rugby has reportedly made the decision to postpone club rugby in the province until June due to the ongoing drought in the Western Cape.

According to IOL Sport, the decision was made at a WP Rugby meeting on Thursday night.

The Western Province club rugby season normally starts in April and a tentative date of June 1 has been pencilled in for the 2018 season to start - provided it rains of course.

Several club pitches in the province have been affected by the drought and have been deemed dangerous to play on.

According to further reports, more injuries than normal were sustained at the recent Tens tournament at Hamilton's.

This decision comes after it was recently announced that all club cricket in the Western Province Cricket Association - Premier League, 1st Division, 2nd Division, and 3rd Division - had been cancelled with immediate effect.

The decision followed the implementation of Level 6B water restrictions in the Western Cape, which prevent pitches and sports fields being watered with municipal drinking water.

This also saw all school cricket cancelled for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, other big sporting events like the Cape Town Cycle Tour (March 11) and the Two Oceans Marathon (March 31) will go ahead, organisers announced.
