Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos named a 34-man provisional squad for the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia next month.

The 69-year-old Belgian-born included some fresh faces that were not part of last month’s first two matches against Zimbabwe and Ghana.

What was notable in those matches is that Broos deployed Sydney Mobbie at left-back, when the right-footed defender prefers playing on the opposite flank.

There was much anticipation for the squad announcement as fans hoped that Broos included Mamelodi Sundowns duo Lyle Lakay and Rivaldo Coetzee.

But it was not to be.

Instead, Broos called up Orlando Pirates trio Goodman Mosele, Vincent Pule, and Tshegofatso Mabasa, while Luke Fleurs of SuperSport United and Tercious Malepe of AmaZulu also made the cut.

What caused social media to go into an uproar was the Broos’ inclusion of Kaizer Chiefs left-back Sifiso Hlanti ahead of Lakay.
