Cape Town - Sergio Romero has expressed his gratitude to Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho for giving him the chance to etch his name in the famous club's history.

The Argentina international arrived at Old Trafford in 2015 on a free transfer from Sampdoria, with the future of first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea uncertain at the time.

Romero started United's first three games of the season, but then served back-up to De Gea when the Spaniard's move to Real Madrid failed to materialise - making just 10 appearances in all competitions for Louis van Gaal's side.

The 30-year-old has seized his chance under Van Gaal's successor, with Mourinho having used him primarily in the Europa League this term, where the keeper has shined.

Romero will start in the final of the competition against Ajax on May 24, and he was given a rare league outing at Southampton on Wednesday, pulling off a string of fine saves, including a penalty from Manolo Gabbiadini.

"For me, the final is very important," he told reporters. "I arrived here in the last year, free, nobody knew me.

"Now with the confidence that Jose gives me and the confidence the players give me and the confidence I have this is very important and I will try and do my best for all, for the team.

"The final will be special for the year, for the club. The most important is the club and the fans and we will go there in Stockholm to win."

United next face Crystal Palace in their final English Premiership clash on Sunday with Mourinho vowing to rest first team regulars and play the youngsters.

Kick off is at 16:00.
