Cape Town - Liverpool midfielder Kevin Stewart knows that he has to keep taking advantage of his opportunities after an eye-catching full debut against Stoke this weekend.

The youngster is one of a number of squad players given an opportunity to impress their manager in a match that saw a number of first-team players rested.

"It was great to play the full 90 after coming back from injury and to be part of such a good team performance," Stewart told The Liverpool Echo, referring to the ankle-ligament injury he sustained on the training ground in February.

"To get those minutes under my belt will really help me. It was my first Premier League start and hopefully I can get a few more and stay injury free," he added.

The 22-year-old, who signed a new contract with the Reds during his time on the sidelines, said that while he was happy with his performance, he knows that there are areas in his play that need improvement: "There were a few mistakes in there which I'll need to learn from but overall I think it went well. I tired a bit towards the end but that was down to not having played much recently. I'll get that fitness back."

Stewart added that boss Jurgen Klopp made it very clear what was needed of him. "The manager told me to keep things simple - to be aggressive, to be confident and to defend well."

The ex-Tottenham player also said that Klopp's management style benefits a young player who is working hard to break into the first team.

"He takes the pressure off players and gives you the belief to go out there and perform. The manager has shown a lot of faith in me and that gives me confidence. I need to keep improving and listening to him."
