London - Feyenoord could face a major blow to their title ambitions, with Watford weighing up recalling in-form winger Steven Berghuis from his season-long loan.

Berghuis joined De Stadionclub in the off-season after failing to command regular first-team football at the Hornets, in his first campaign in England.

The 25-year-old arrived at Vicarage Road for £4.6m with the reputation of a hard-working winger who is capable of playing on either flank, but in his temporary spell with Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side, he has proven his ability.

With four goals in 13 league games, Berghuis has helped to setup the Rotterdam-based side for a chance of securing their first title since the 1998/99 season.

However, Walter Mazzarri, head coach at his parent club, may exercise the option to bring the Netherlands international back to the Premier League as their squad is set to be depleted by the African Cup of Nations departures of Nordin Amrabat and Adlene Guedioura.

"I will speak with the club and see what all the options are we have available for January," he told reporters.

"I'm very happy he's doing very well in another league, even if it's a different competition to the Premier League."

Watford next welcome an in-form Tottenham Hotspur side to the Vicarage Road Stadium in a New Years Day fixture.

Kick off is at 15:30.
