Cape Town - Sunderland manager David Moyes has heaped praise on Paddy McNair after his first professional goals in his career and insisted that he is not a defender.

McNair joined the Black Cats from Manchester United during the off season, with many tipping the former Red Devil to become a mainstay in Moyes defence. However, the Scottish coach he has other plans for the Northern Ireland international.

After 27 appearances in the past two seasons at United, the 21-year-old was shipped out by new manager Jose Mourinho for a reported fee of £4.5m.

Moyes revealed that he actually graduated from United's academy as an attacking playmaker and not in the defensive role he occupied for his former club.

"There is some misconception with his position. He is an attacking midfielder, he started as a boy as a No.10," he said after McNair's two goals against QPR in the EFL cup.

"He is very much an attacking midfielder. We have seen in training. He is a good finisher.

"I believe he is better moving up the pitch and tonight was good for him. I think he will go on to be a really good buy for us but he needs a bit of developing."
