Highlands Park and Maritzburg United could not be separated as the sides played to a 1-1 draw at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Team of Choice took the lead in the 13th minute when midfielder Bandile Shandu's cross found defender Pogiso Sanoka, who headed home with aplomb.
Three minutes later, Thabiso Kutumela's long-range shot headed for the top-right hand corner was well saved by Highlands goalkeeper Marlon Heugh.
In the 18th minute, Marks Munyai found in-form Highlands striker Peter Shalulile with a through-ball, but the Namibian unluckily hit the post with the effort.
Two minutes later, Mothobi Mvala's header was just too high after he was assisted by Luckyboy Mokoena. In the 35th minute, Mvala had another headed opportunity after this time being assisted by Ryan Rae but he could not find the target.
Five minutes later, Mvala once again found himself unmarked in the box and this time missed to the right from Lindokuhle Mbatha's free-kick.
In the 53rd minute, Shandu's fierce strike grazed the crossbar as the men from KZN survived a scare. And with ten minutes to go, Kutumela should have done much better from close range after getting on the end of Bongokuhle Hlongwane's cross.
And the Team of Choice would be punished for their wastefulness when the Lions of the North equalised with just three minutes left of regular time.
Former Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot Award winner finished clinically from Mbatha's cross to ensure the Lions of the North came away from the match with a share of the spoils.
