AmaZulu secured a vital victory in their battle to avoid relegation as they edged out Black Leopards 1-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
It was Bonga Ntuli who scored the only goal of game as Usuthu climbed out of the drop zone with two matches of the season remaining.
Amazulu started the game brightly and were duly rewarded in the seventh minute when Ntuli got in front of his marker and neatly finished off a low cross from strike partner Lehlohonolo Majoro.
Leopards engineered their first chance of the afternoon 15 minutes into the encounter but Lifa Hlongwane saw his effort sail over the bar.
Majoro then wasted a golden opportunity to doube his side's lead as he mis-kicked an inviting Siyethemba Sithebe cross from four-yards out.
The Lidoda Duvha defence was at sixes and sevens later in the half and panic seemed to set in after an Amazulu set-piece but goalkkeeper King Ndlovu saved Siphelele Magubane's shot.
Leopards came into the contest as the half came to a close with an Edwin Gyimah header hitting the post and then Robert Ng'ambi hit an acrobatic effort over the top in first half stoppage time.
The Limpopo-based team made all the running after the break but failed to penetrate the Usuthu defence with quality in the final third severely lacking.
Both teams showed why they are languishing at the bottom end of the league table as possession was turned over a number of times with passes failing to stick.
Leopards though almost found an equaliser with the last kick of the game but Amazulu shot-stopper Siyabonga Mbatha brillaintly blocked an effort from Tumelo Khutlang.
The three points moves Usuthu up to 13th on the PSL table, three ahead of the drop zone, while Leopards move down a place, only a sigle point ahead of the relegation-threatened sides.
