Cape Town Spurs claimed the scalp of Baroka FC in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 on Monday evening as they held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties after extra-time ended 1-1.

Baroka claimed the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Richard Mbulu, but Ashley Cupido produced a brilliant bit of skill to level matters in the 57th minute and the score would remain unchanged after two more halves in extra-time.

The visiting Spurs came flying out of the starting traps and created three decent chances in the opening ten minutes.

The first chance fell to Keoikantse Mosiatlhaga, who fired over from outside the box, before Ashley Cupido saw his goalbound shot deflected behind for a corner.

Cupido teed up Chumani Butsaka for their third chance but the resulting shot on goal was snapped up by Oscarine Masuluke in the Baroka goal.

Baroka hit back by fashioning three chances of their own but they would go to waste as Kgodiso Monama and Tshediso Patjie failed to find the mark with their respective efforts.

Both teams continued to create chances as the half wore on, with Spurs keeper Lincoln Vyver denying Richard Mbulu on the half-hour mark while at the opposite end of the pitch, Masuluke saved Mosiatlhaga's long-range shot in the bottom-left corner.

Masuluke was again called into action in the 43rd minute, denying Thendo Mukumela what looked to be a certain goal following a well-worked corner.

The opening goal eventually arrived in the first minute of injury time, Mbulu finding the back of the net with a shot from the centre of the box.

Spurs again started brightly after the restart and went close to drawing level in the 54th minute as the ball fell kindly to Abednego Mosiatlhaga in the Baroka area. However, the winger failed to capitalise as he fired over the bar from close range.

However, Spurs kept pressing forward and they were rewarded on 57 minutes as Cupido fired home on the volley following a pin-point cross into the box from Cohen Stander.

Baroka redoubled their efforts after conceding the equaliser but met some staunch opposition in the shape of Lincoln Vyver, who made three good saves in quick succession.

However, it was the visitors who ended the second half in the ascendancy, going close through efforts from Butsaka and substitute Riyaad Norodien.

There was one last chance for Spurs to reclaim the lead but Masuluke was equal to the task, palming Thendo Mukumela's powerful shot away from danger.

Spurs would go on to produce the best chance of the first half of extra-time but Masuluke was again alert to the danger, quickly rushing off his line to deny Mukumela, who was well placed to score.

And there was a flurry of chances in the second half with the lottery of a penalty shootout looming.

Baroka duo Thamsanqa Masiya and Joslin Kamatuka squandered two early chances while Kegan Johannes and Asenele Velebayi went close to breaking the deadlock for Spurs.

However, with neither side able to find the all-important breakthrough, the match would head to penalties.

The teams matched each other - even in missing their third penalty - until Barokas's Thuso Mogale saw his spot-kick saved by Vyver.

Riyaaz Koopstadt stepped up to take his side's fifth penalty and held his nerve, placing the ball in the bottom-right corner to send his side through to the Nedbank Cup Last 16.
