  • Benni McCarthy has all the respect for Gavin Hunt despite his struggles at Chiefs.
  • For McCarthy, coaching against Hunt is special.
  • He knows the quality of the teams coached by Hunt.

Despite Kaizer Chiefs' current struggles, Benni McCarthy always looks forward coaching against Gavin Hunt.

The student and the master will be clashing on Wednesday afternoon when their respective sides AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs meet in a DSTV Premiership game at Kings Park.

It's a must win for both teams as Chiefs find themselves in unfamiliar territory of 14th on the log after nine games with only one win.

AmaZulu, who had a change of ownership and brought in a raft of players, are ninth on the log and a win will push them into the top eight as eighth-placed Baroka are two points ahead of them.

AmaZulu have won two of their nine games with four draws and three losses.

McCarthy said it has always been an honour coaching against Hunt and his team will have to be well equipped to beat Chiefs.

"I was player under his guidance before I moved to Europe. He's been a very special and influential person in my footballing career. I'm always honoured and privileged to have the opportunity to play and coach against him," McCarthy said.

"I know the quality they possess and hopefully my team will be well organised, well set up and well equipped to compete and be victorious.  It's always nice when the student gets one over the master."

McCarthy and Hunt have had legendary clashes during their spells as Cape Town City and Bidvest Wits mentors. McCarthy parted ways with Cape Town City last year after a poor run of results, from where he was replaced by Jan Olde Riekerink.

Hunt joined Kaizer Chiefs from the now-defunct Wits where he replaced Ernst Middendorp, who failed to win the league with the Glamour Boys after leading for the better part of the 2019/20 season.
