Kaizer Chiefs and head coach Gavin Hunt were left still smiling after this weekend's CAF Champions League action as his side secured a place in the continental competition's semi-finals.C
Champions were also crowned - some in dramatic fashion - as the underdog prevailed across Europe's top five leagues, bringing the curtain down on a unique campaign few will soon forget.
Here Sport24 highlights some of the weekend's best soccer action:
Kaizer Chiefs move a step closer to unlikely CAF continental crown
Gavin Hunt's side advanced to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League despite a 3-0 away to Simba SC on Saturday. Chiefs won the tie by a 4-3 aggregate scoreline thanks to their impressive first-leg performance. It is an unlikely storyline for a Chiefs side who currently find themselves languishing in 11th position in the PSL standings, with just six wins in 27 league matches played. Amakhosi have somehow defied the odds in the continental competition and will face Wydad Casablanca in a two-legged semi-final tie at the beginning of June. Still viewed as outsiders for the title and probably the fourth best team of the remaining contenders, Chiefs could still pull off yet more surprises. Will Gavin Hunt have the last laugh?
Suarez proves doubters and Barcelona wrong to win La Liga
At the end of last season Barcelona released a distraught Luis Suarez who they thought at 34-years-old was too old and didn't have the legs to compete at the highest level. The Uruguayan then took a pay-cut to join rivals Atletico Madrid as a free agent and went on to score an incredible 21 goals to fire Diego Simeone's side to an unlikely La Liga title for the first time since 2014. In a dramatic final day, and needing a win to be crowned La Liga champions, Atletico pulled off a 2-1 come from behind victory, with Suarez again proving the difference by scoring the winner in the 67th minute in a fairy-tale ending to the season for the striker. Suarez was later shown in tears while celebrating in an emotional phone call with family.
Another sensational upset as Lille clinch unlikely Ligue 1 title
Speaking of upsets, none is bigger than Lille being crowned Ligue 1 champions over PSG in France's Ligue 1. Lille pulled off a 2-1 win over Angers on the final day of the season to be crowned champions by a single point over second-placed PSG. It is their first league crown in ten years and is made the more remarkable by beating the riches of PSG who have won Ligue 1 on seven occasions over the last eight seasons.
Genius Pep Guardiola guides Man City to Premier League crown
Pep Guardiola's side proved to be superior to the rest of the league as his side deservedly got their hands on the Premier League trophy. Guardiola is proving in the most competitive league that he should be regarded as one of the very best managers ever after lifting his third league title in his first five years at City. The Catalan shows no sign of complacency in victory and will now be turning his attention to a highly-anticipated Champions League final.
