Combinations in South Africa football aren't new. When Orlando Pirates were the dominant team at the start of the previous decade, Andile Jali and Oupa Manyisa were called the "militant midgets".

When the baton was passed to Kaizer Chiefs' Mandla Masango, George Lebese and George Maluleka in Stuart Baxter's first tenure as Chiefs coach, "MaLeMa" caused untold problems for teams in the two seasons (2012/13 and 2014/15) when Chiefs won the league.

At the time, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane had Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat and Keegan Dolly forming the feared "CBD".
