Cape Town City FC were unable to get revenge on Chippa United for their Nedbank Cup defeat after the sides played to a 0-0 draw in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday.
These teams met on Sunday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium when Chippa United edged and eliminated Cape Town City in extra-time to advance to the Nedbank Cup last eight.
In the fifth minute, Aubrey Mngoma found Thabo Nodada, who tried to round Ayanda Mtshali but the Chippa keeper snuffed out the danger.
City were finding good space and dominating the majority of possession against the hosts. With 20 minutes gone, Ngoma timed his run to perfection, but his shot went just over the bar after a great pass from Mpho Makola.
Soon after, Chippa created an opportunity on their right-hand side, with Nyiko Mobbie forcing a fine save from Peter Leeuwenburgh at the near post from close range.
In the 51st minute, a great interception by Makola set off a City attack with Nodada finding Ngoma but the shot went wide.
Chippa forward Justin Shonga then should have scored when he headed wide from an Ngoma cross from close-range.but his header couldn’t find the target.
It was better from Chippa United as they strung an attack together, with Bongile Booi setting up George Mogakwe, but the substituted blaze over the bar.
With ten minutes remaining the Citizens' pacy winger Craig Martin went for goal. It was a difficult angle, but it was still mightily close to going into the roof of the net as it grazed the crossbar.
And in the end, the match fizzled out to a rather dour goalless draw.
