Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango admits he thought he would clubs would have already begun training but understands the complexities in ensuring a safe return.

The government have given the greenlight to return to training, following the comprehensive testing of all players and staff and the sanitisation of training facilities.

The Premier Soccer League has been suspended since March, as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, and plans to resume the league are currently underway.

A number of clubs have already reported positive coronavirus cases, including Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic, Stellenbosch FC, TS Galaxy and Swallows FC.

Speaking to the Daily Monitor, Onyango explained that while is surprised to still be sitting at home, he is delighted to have begun the process of playing competitive action again this season.

He said: "We are still waiting for an official letter from the PSL to start training even though the Minister of Sports allowed us to start.

"So, we are still home but at least now we know we can play again. I think they (PSL) just need to supervise the training grounds first and see if it's safe and then allow us to start.

"I actually thought it would have started long before this because we were given a green light when we started level three of the lockdown.

"But with contact sports, you need to check first the safety of the players before you restart. Also, looking at how the numbers (for Coronavirus cases) were growing, it made the process difficult.

"But at last, here we are... but I think we have to go back for second testing before that."
