Kaizer Chiefs succumbed to a devastating stoppage-time strike from Bienvenu Eva Nga at FNB Stadium on Sunday to lose 1-0 after missing numerous chances against Bidvest Wits.

There was early action at both ends in the first few minutes of the encounter. A free kick for Wits was swung in from the left flank and found an unmarked Thulani Hlatshwayo who headed just past the far post, before a Chiefs cross found Samir Nurkovic whose header was kept out by Ricardo Goss.

Chiefs built up a promising attack through midfield around the 18-minute mark but wasted it when Kgotso Moleko rushed a shot from long range and sent the ball wide.

Half an hour in, Sifiso Hlanti almost caught out Daniel Akpeyi as he attempted a cheeky chip shot from a tight angle, but the Chiefs goalkeeper tipped it over.

In the 39th minute the referee made a controversial call when he decided against awarding Chiefs what appeared to be a clear-cut penalty.

Reeve Frosler created the problem for Wits as he maneuvered into the box and took a touch past Hlatshwayo. The defender slid in and brought him down by making contact with the winger's chin a long time after the ball had left the scene, but the referee saw it differently.

In first-half stoppage time there was a scary moment for Akpeyi as he took a knock to the head and had to be stretchered off, presumably with a concussion. He was replaced by Bruce Bvuma.

Chiefs continued pushing for the opening goal and created an opening in the 57th minute when a ball over the top penetrated the Wits defence. Nurkovic played it on for Moleko, but his first touch was poor and the subsequent shot lacked quality.

It was all Amakhosi as the second half wore on. The Soweto giants put together a swift counter-attack which saw Nurkovic play Kearyn Baccus through in the right channel, but his shot was wild.

Nurkovic then put the ball in the back of the Wits net in the 75th minute but he was well offside and brought back after the flag was raised.

Frosler came close to breaking the deadlock when he ran onto the ball from deep and drilled a low shot just past the near post.

Former Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho almost scored an own goal shortly thereafter as a cross came in from Frosler, but Goss made a brilliant save to push the ball wide.

In the 90th minute Chiefs missed a sitter. Teddy Akumu sent a perfect low cross from the right flank towards the far post where Nurkovic was unmarked with the goal at his mercy, but the striker somehow poked the ball over the bar from close range to the utter disbelief of coach Ernst Middendorp.

Despite being dominated for most of the game, Wits incredibly scored a winner in the 94th minute when Bienvenu Eva Nga was put through on goal with a single pass and he slotted it with great composure to steal three points at the death.

The defeat sees Chiefs lose control of the title chase as they are now relying on other results to go their way with Sundowns snapping at their heels, while Wits move up to third.
