Cape Town - Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson would rather promote players from the development ranks at the club than to buy during the transfer window.

Johnson has so far managed to get the most out of his current squad, with Dikwena in fifth place on the table with 20 points from 12 games.

Johnson refused to entertain talks of a title challenge and revealed that his objective for the season is to guide Stars to a top-eight finish.

"No, I won't sign any players and will fight with what I have at my disposal. The idea is to try and promote a few players from the academy," he told KickOff.

"It's a case of three steps forward and five steps back, you know. Let's face it, we are in a building phase. It will be important to make sure the ethos of the club remains.

"This takes special people with a special vision. But overall I am happy with the boys at the academy.

"We will be looking at competing with the teams in our bracket, because let's face it, we cannot compete with the so-called top four of five teams in the PSL."
