Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that they will not host Saturday's DStv Premiership encounter against Cape Town City following a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

Earlier on Friday, Kaizer Chiefs confirmed that at least 31 employees tested positive for the coronavirus with Amakhosi training facilities being temporarily closed until next week.

"Unfortunately, this is the only option available in the current situation and, as a responsible corporate citizen, Kaizer Chiefs upholds its duty to protect the lives of those around us - including others - and do our best to avoid an outbreak that might potentially affect the league and the country," read their statement.

The club has also instructed that all players, members of the technical team and staff, who are deemed primary contacts, to quarantine as per official protocols.

In light of the outbreak of Covid-19 infections in the country, Chiefs submitted two letters to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), "pleading" for the organisation to postpone all the upcoming December matches.

Stuart Baxter's side were expected to take on the now-cancelled Cape Town City this weekend, followed by matches against Golden Arrows (8 December), Sekhukhune FC (12 December), Royal AM (19 December) and Maritzburg United (22 December).

Chiefs are currently second on the PSL standings, winning six of their 13 games and trail the leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by eight points.
