Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns captain and influential midfielder Hlompho Kekana says it would make him very happy to lead the team to league success as skipper.

Sundowns' effective holding midfielder scored an important late goal to give the defending Premiership champions a vital 1-0 victory over rivals SuperSport United in a league encounter on Wednesday night.

The fourth-placed Brazilians are now only two points behind current leaders Cape Town City.

Kekana exclusively told Vodacom Soccer: "We knew it wasn't going to be easy to beat SuperSport for the second time in a row, but we badly needed the vital points to keep up with the league title contenders.

"The win has seen us back in league title contention, and we are gradually closing a gap between us and league leaders. So, with eight games left we have to fight like soldiers for vital points."

With five goals to his name in all competitions, the 31-year-old admits the prospect of leading the club to a title success for the first time is something he relishes.

He added: "Yes, I have won the league title twice in 2013/14 and 2015/16 since joining Sundowns five seasons ago, but have led the team to CAF Champions League victory as a captain.

"And of course I would be a happy man to lead the team to another league victory as a captain. I know the battle (for the title) is still a little bit far from over, but as the league defenders we have a duty to defend the title and give our supporters something to celebrate when the season ends."

Kekana took over the captaincy at the start of this season after previous skipper Ramahlwe Mphahlele departed for Kaizer Chiefs prior to the 2016/17 campaign.
