Pirates last participated in the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2018, where they suffered a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel.

Two years prior to that in 2013, Pirates went down to Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly 3-1 on aggregate in the CAF Champions League final.

If Pirates do overcome Tripoli in the second leg, they will either face TP Mazembe (DR Congo) or RSB Berkane (Morocco) in the final on Sunday, 29 May.

Mazembe have a 1-0 aggregate lead over Berkane. That 2nd leg kicks off after this match at 21:00 (SA time).
