Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Brian Mathe believes changes need to be made at the club if they have any hopes of returning to winning ways.

Amakhosi have been forced to rebuild and start planning for next season following a dismal 2015/16 campaign that will see them finish without any silverware.

Mathe has advised Chiefs management to start thinking about releasing some of their senior players who have been with the club too long, insisting they may be lacking motivation due to huge success under previous coaches in the past.

"One of the problems that I have is that looking at players like Itu Khune, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Bernard Parker, Tsepo Masilela, Willard Katsande and Siboniso Gaxa. Those guys have been at Chiefs for far too long and they won championships," he told Goal website.

"Some of them played under Muhsin Ertugral and Vladimir Vermezovic. Chiefs need to have depth and they don't have. Now you bring in a coach and you say to him take over this team and move us forward.

"It's not your Pep Guardiola where your quality is still there. You have to recycle the team. At some point, you need to take out 'Pa' Gaxa, at some point you need to take out Morgan Gould.

"Chiefs cannot afford to make wholesale changes like that because they always have to win something. Every cup that they lose comes out of their shelf, I tell you it's not an easy team to coach.

"He [Steve Komphela] has got that pressure where he has lost two cup finals and that on its own is pressure."
