Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Robson Muchichwa has backed the sweeping changes made at the club.

Amakhosi unveiled eight new players after announcing that some 20 players had been released or made available for transfer.

Coach Steve Komphela will be looking for a better showing from his new-look team after a disappointing 2015/16 Absa Premiership campaign.

Muchichwa believes Chiefs will need to play with more vigour in the upcoming season in order to compete.

"I think Chiefs needed to axe players...If you don't pull your weight at a team like Kaizer Chiefs you need be out of the team," Muchichwa told KickOff.

"Because the team that played last season, for me, I was not happy. Things were not happening and there was no combination; there was no fighting spirit. In actual fact, for me there was nothing.

"I think they need to build up the confidence - that is number one, number two - they need to be build combinations.

"Mostly they need to combine because you can't win games if you don't combine. Like Mamelodi Sundowns, they were winning games because they were combining."
