Cape Town - Cape Town City winger Aubrey Ngoma believes the team's defence wasn't good enough for a real Premiership title challenge last season.

The Citizens finished their league campaign in third position, only five points behind champions Bidvest Wits, but they also conceded more goals than any of the top five sides.

Ngoma believes improving the team's defence for the upcoming season would be the most important aspect to focus on.

“As a team, I think we surprised a lot of teams. They didn’t know how to plan properly for us. Now that they know what to expect, we have to come up with something different and one thing we need to improve on is our defence,” Ngoma told Goal.com website.

“We conceded a lot of goals that affected us from becoming league winners. A lot of coaches usually say that strikers win you games, but defenders win you league titles.

"If we stay solid at the back, I think we have the quality to get us the goals. I think that’s one area that needs a lot of improvement."

Meanwhile, Sport24 understands that Benni McCarthy flew to Cape Town on Friday to meet with City owner, John Comitis, and held discussions on how to take the club forward after the sudden resignation of Eric Tinkler, who took over the reins at SuperSport United.
