Stellenbosch and Chippa United drew 1-1 at Tuks Stadium in their Absa Premiership encounter on Friday after a stoppage-time equaliser broke wine country hearts.
Chippa saw plenty of the ball in the early stages but Stellies implemented a high press which often forced mistakes from them, while the midfield was a back-and-forth battle.
The pressure Chippa were under finally paid off for the Cape Winelands outfit in the 16th minute when a throw-in from the left was flicked on and Phetso Maphanga failed to clear the danger, allowing Waseem Isaacs to pounce on the loose ball with a brilliant turn and strike which bulged the back of the net.
After scoring the opener Stellies abandoned the high press and defended deeper with a more compact formation, which forced Chippa to play through them.
Stellies' change in style allowed Chippa to dominate possession, but they were unable to break through the disciplined defensive structure.
In the 32nd minute Ryan Moon made an incisive diagonal run to get onto a through-ball from deep, but Chippa goalkeeper Veli Mothwa closed him down just in time to knock the ball clear.
Steve Barker's charges created another opportunity shortly before the half-time break when Alan Robertson played a perfectly weighted pass into space for Leletu Skelem, whose shot was too close to Mothwa to truly threaten the goal.
The Chilli Boys made a bright start after the break. Thabane Thopola crossed from the right and almost caught Lee Langeveldt by surprise as it seemed destined to dip under the bar, but the Stellies goalkeeper tipped it over.
Two minutes later Chippa were on the attack again as a cross from the left found Andile Mbenyane at the near post, but his header was kept out by Langeveldt, who reacted quickly to make the save.
At the other end of the pitch Skelem came within inches of scoring Stellenbosch's second. Mothwa came far off his line but failed to grab the ball. Skelem then attempted the shot from the narrowest of angles and could only send it across the face of goal.
Stellies absorbed the pressure, remained disciplined in defence and looked set to secure the win, but in the 94th minute Thokozani Sekotlong pounced on a loose ball after a missed tackle and thumped home from close range to salvage a draw for Chippa at the death.
