Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns have been charged by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for violating a rule related to fielding an ineligible player in a MultiChoice Diski Challenge match.

According to a PSL statement, Thabang Sibanyoni appeared in a game for Downs' MDC outfit in 4 December's 1-1 draw against Chippa United even though he was suspended after picking up four yellow cards.

"The PSL has charged Sundowns and their player Thabang Sibanyoni with contravening Rule 55.1 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and the NSL Rule 54.1.4," said the league's press release.

"This is after Sundowns fielded Sibanyoni in the MDC fixture on 04 December 2016 despite the player having accumulated four yellow cards and therefore making him ineligible to take the field by reason of automatic suspension for one match.

"Sundowns and Sibanyoni will appear in front of a Disciplinary Committee convened by the League on 08 February."
