SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has confirmed that Dean Furman has been released from his contract to return to his family in the UK.

Furman already said this season would be his last with Matsatsantsa - after six years of service - with his contract coming to an end in June.

However, with the football season currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, the midfielder has been granted early leave to be with his pregnant wife in the UK.

"I have said to him he can go back for the birth of his child and knowing Dean he probably planned the conception so that he could go in June during the off-season when his wife, who is already there, gives birth," Matthews said, according to Soccer Laduma.

"The season was supposed to end on 21 May and I thought maybe we could make the Nedbank Cup final and I had asked him to book his flight a week after.

"Now with this coronavirus we are definitely not going to be kicking a ball before his child is born.

"So I have said he can go now and doesn’t have to come back."

The South African-born Furman, who grew up in England, had played for Rangers, Bradford City, Oldham Athletic and Doncaster Rovers before signing for Matsatsantsa in 2015.

He also boasts a half-century of caps for Bafana Bafana.
