Cape Town City were rampant at home on Saturday as they thrashed SuperSport United 3-0 in the DStv Premiership.

SCORECARD | PSL - Cape Town City v SuperSport United

The game was off to a pedestrian start as neither team looked particularly decisive moving the ball around the field.

Amethyst Ralani produced the first shot at goal after Abdul Ajagun's pass put him into a pocket of space, and Bongani Khumalo was on hand for United to make the block.

Terrence Mashego showed good positional play on the attack for City as he made a promising overlapping run to put pressure on the visitors but his first touch wasn't good enough and the chance went begging.

City were in the ascendancy as the first half wore on and Fagrie Lakay came close to breaking the deadlock as he sent a shot just over the bar.

The Mother City outfit didn't have to wait much longer though, because they were awarded a penalty after Thatayaone Ditlhokwe's late tackle on Tashreeq Morris in the box. Lakay stepped up and converted with great composure in the 35th minute to make it 1-0.

United slowly found their feet in the early stages of the second half, and came close to levelling matters from a corner kick around the hour mark.

The corner was swung in from the left and beat Peter Leeuwenburgh but Mpho Makola was on hand to make the vital clearance off the line to maintain the lead.

However, it was the home team who scored next to double their advantage in the 64th minute. Ralani initially missed a chance to shoot as he dwelled on the ball, but the chance came again as Thabo Nodada played in Makola who found the back of the net from close range for 2-0.

City had a great chance again as Lakay was into space in the right channel. He crossed low towards Morris whose shot was straight at Ronwen Williams.

Substitute Mduduzi Mdantsane almost scored right after coming onto the pitch. He was in space in the box but he rattled the post with his effort.

The result was put beyond doubt in the 85th minute as City continued dominating proceedings. A corner kick found Mkhize open at the far post and his shot deflected off Williams to fall for Morris who simply tapped it into the goal for 3-0 to secure the spoils for the home side.
