Cape Town - Moroka Swallows are hoping to purchase the Absa Premiership status of Free State Stars, according to widespread reports.

Last week, Sport24 reported that the Dube Birds have been itching to get back into top flight football after approaching a PSL and an NFD (National First Division) side about the option of a new ownership takeover.

Swallows suffered back-to-back relegations over the past two seasons and will ply their trade in the ABC Motsepe League for 2016/17 season.

According to KickOff, Swallows have made contact with Ea Lla Koto and could be under new ownership in a matter of weeks.

Talks are said to be at an advanced stage and the deal could be announced "at any moment".

However, Swallows and Stars are still awaiting for confirmation from the PSL on whether the deal can take place.

If the new Swallows owners were to strike a deal, they would be the second Premiership club to be sold before the start of the new season.

Cape Town City FC owners bought Mpumalanga Black Aces - and changed the name of the club - ahead of the new campaign. Eric Tinkler was also announced as the club's new head coach by boss, John Comitis.

The new PSL season is set for a midweek kick-off starting on Tuesday, August 23.
