Cape Town - Cape TownCity head coach Eric Tinkler says hat-trick hero Bhongolwethu Jayiya has not lived up to his potential yet and urged him to aim for consistency.

Tinkler was an integral part of Jayiya making his first-team breakthrough at Bidvest Wits in 2010, where he lit up the South African top-flight - scoring eight goals in his first 12 games.

However, over the next two campaigns the winger struggled to earn a regular starting berth and subsequently joined Maritzburg United in January 2014, where he scored four goals and registered three assists in 12 games.

That form led him to a lucrative switch to now defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces - but the 27-year-old reunited with Tinkler as one of the 14 players retained from Amazayoni, as the newly formed Cape Town City FC.

"It's great for Bhongo! I've been on his case for quite a while now because I know what he is capable of," Tinkler told SuperSport TV after Jayiya's treble earned them a 4-1 victory over Chippa United.

"I found Bhongo back in 2007, so I know about him and his history, and I expected him to achieve a lot more than what he has as a footballer.

"And that's what he is capable of. He needs now to become consistent. That's what has become very important in his game."

Jayiya has scored six goals and registered two assists in 21 games across all competitions this season, helping the first-placed Citizens sustain a surprise title challenge.
