Cape Town - Bidvest Wits assistant coach Andre Arendse believes the club's success stems from the hard work they have put in to create a solid defensive foundation.

The Clever Boys beat Chippa United 3-1 on Sunday to move two points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership table 13 games into the season.

Wits have only lost two league matches this season, a 4-2 loss to fellow title contenders Mamelodi Sundowns back in August and, more recently, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Arendse is pleased with the way the current campaign is unfolding and revealed they have put extra emphasis on keeping their defence tight.

"A lot of successful coaches will tell you that it is your defence which will ultimately win you league titles at the end of the season, so we pay a lot of attention to that," Arendse told Soccer Laduma.

"We pride ourselves on keeping a lot of clean sheets and keeping it tight at the back. It is an all-round approach for us.

"In our 13 league games in this campaign, we have lost only two games - against Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. They always challenge for league titles every season."
