Cape Town - Stellenbosch FC have been promoted to South Africa's top-flight after being crowned National First Division (NFD) champions with a 0-0 draw against Maccabi FC on Sunday.

Stellenbosch did enough to win the league by three points after being handed a favour by fellow Cape side, Ubuntu FC who claimed a 1-0 win over second-placed Royals Eagles.

The win though was not enough for Ubuntu who were relegated alongside Witbank Spurs to South Africa's third tier.

The side from the Cape Winelands will now for the first time in the club's history compete in the Absa Premiership, with Eagles and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM FC) competing in the promotional play-offs for the final top-flight spot.

Head coach Steve Barker praised his inexperienced side after clinching promotion paying tribute to their hard work throughout the season.

"These players have stood up and been counted," Barker said. They're a young group of players with not one single player having experience of winning a league title.

"So for us to have actually stayed on top of the league for 23 weeks is testament to the work ethic and hard work they put in and they deserve everything they get, they deserve to be promoted."
