Cape Town - South Africa's top tennis player, Kevin Anderson, has undergone minor surgery to a troublesome ankle.

Anderson, currently ranked No 15 on the official ATP rankings, has struggled with injury of late and is not taking part in this week's Indian Wells Masters tournament.

He was also forced to retire injured in the first round of this year's Australian Open.

Anderson, 29, hopes to be ready in time for the clay court season.

He posted the following message to fans on his official Facebook page:

Hi guys,

As you have probably noticed, I've had some injury problems which have caused me to withdraw from a few tournaments recently. My shoulder hasn’t been firing as it should, so I have been advised to take some time out to do some rehab so that my serve is firing on all cylinders! I therefore took this time to have some (very minor) surgery on my ankle yesterday – which the doctor said went very well. The ankle hasn’t been a huge problem, but I’m told that this procedure should extend my career for a few more years in the long run.

As for my return, I have my eyes on playing some clay court tennis this year… So stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted.

Best,
Kev.
