Dominic Thiem has taken to social media to apologise for playing his part in the controversial Adria Tour.

The exhibition tournament was launched by world No 1 Novak Djokovic to raise funds for humanitarian projects in the Balkan region and was due to run from 12 June to 5 July.

However, the event was cancelled earlier this week after ATP Tour players Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric and Viktor Troicki all tested positive for coronavirus.

The news came on the back of heavy criticism aimed at organisers of the tournament as players and fans did not adhere to social distancing rules.

World No 3 Thiem, who played in the Belgrade leg of the event, expressed regret over the players’ antics.

“I was shocked when I got the news from the Adria Tour,” he wrote on Instagram.

“We played without an audience for weeks, so we have been more than happy about the fans at the event. We trusted the Serbian governments Coronavirus rules, but we have been too optimistic.

“Our behaviour was a mistake, we acted too euphorically. I am extremely sorry. I’ve now got tested 5 times within the last 10 days and the result was always negative. I wish everyone who was infected all the best and a quick recovery.”
