Cape Town - 17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, has announced on Friday that Stefan Edberg is to join his coaching team in the New Year.

Federer made the announcement on his Facebook page, saying that Edberg will join long-time coach, Severin L├╝thi, as part of his team.

Edberg will join Federer in Melbourne in time for the start of the year's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open.

The Swede, a six-time Grand Slam champion himself, will only work with Federer for short periods of time throughout the year.

"Severin, who has been part of my team for the last 7 years, will do most of the weeks and Stefan has agreed to work with us for at least 10 weeks starting at the Australian Open in Melbourne," stated Federer.

"Stefan was my childhood hero, and I am really looking forward to spending time and learning from him."
