South Africa's Lloyd Harris let slip a one-set advantage to go down to Norway's Casper Ruud in the Indian Wells Masters third round on Monday.
Ruud, the sixth seed and world No 10, rallied to beat Harris 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-4.
Harris, the 26th seed and world No 31, had ample opportunities in the match but couldn't convert on any of the eight break point chances he had.
With this win, Ruud extended his winning streak to nine matches and he next faces Argentine 11th seed Diego Schwartzman for a place in the quarter-finals.
"It was a very tough match and I was fortunate to get through in the end," Ruud said in a courtside interview. "There were only some points here and there that decided this match. I saved a lot of break points and in crucial points I stepped up my game.
"It was frustrating because Lloyd was playing well and I was not really feeling the groove like I felt in the first match and in the end I was fortunate to get through."
Ruud, though, upped his game in the crucial moments against Harris, before advancing after two hours and 51 minutes and improve to 2-0 head-to-head against the South African.
When probed on how he remained positive, Ruud said: "It is quite a simple quote my dad told me when I was young. He used to go to an academy called Rick Macci and he would always tell my father that losers find excuses and winners find a way. This is a quote my dad has been telling me for many years. You always try to find a way. Today I did. I was down pretty much the whole match and I found a way luckily."
Meanwhile, South Africa's other singles contestant, Kevin Anderson, is still in the competition and faces French veteran and 14th seed Gael Monfils for a spot in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
