In the wake of Cassper Nyovest’s release of Tito Mboweni this morning here’s a list of other artists that named a song after other celebs. Cassper Nyovest – “Tito Mboweni” and “Doc Shebeleza”
After teasing fans about releasing his new single, the rapper’s anticipated track titled after the eighth Governor of the South African Reserve Bank and the first black South African to hold the post hit the sound waves today. After just 20 minutes after its release on iTunes it the number one spot. Yesterday Cassper comfirmed that he had received Mboweni’s blessing to release the track. This was after Mboweni had previously jokingly asked for royalties before the song’s release, even calling on EFF leader Julius Malema to negotiate for him. Can’t say the man doesn’t have a sense of humour! The hit that launched Cassper to stardom in 2014 was, of course, Doc Shebeleza – named after the ‘90s kwaito star. Seem he’s onto something here…
Emtee – “Pearl Thusi”
The second single from Emtee’s album, Avery, was of course the popular track the rapper wrote about his crush on the actress and TV presenter. Things didn’t stop there though – Pearl even featured in the song’s music video.
Kelly Khumalo – “Senzo”
Kelly released the track to honour her late ex-boyfriend and Bafana Bafana captain in her album, My Truth. Speaking to Anele Mdoda on Real Talk, the singer said of the song: “It will always be in the Kelly Khumalo archives for years to come. And one day when my daughter listens to it she will know how I felt about her father.”
Jay Z – “Tom Ford”
Jay-Z wrote an entire song dedicated to the renowned fashion designer on his album, Magna Carta Holy Grail. “Who would not be flattered to have an entire Jay-Z track named after them?” came Tom’s response to the track. “I mean, come on, it’s pretty rare that something like that happens. It’s a kind of validation of one’s work, as it means that one has really penetrated and made an impact on popular culture. My favourite line is 'I don't pop Molly, I rock Tom Ford.' I love that he gets a 'high' from my clothes."
Maroon 5 (featuring Christina Aguilera) - "Moves Like Jagger"
Who can forget one of 2011's earwormiest songs? Adam Levine teamed up with his The Voice colleague, Christina Aguilera, to honour the venerable’s rock band Rolling Stones frontman’s legendary dance moves.
