Popular lingo changes all the time, and it seems celebs are at the forefront of coming up with phrases that we use everyday.
Euphonik – “#Nonke”
Who can forget the DJ’s infamous seven-part Twitter rant last year? Targeted mainly at the “Queen,” his tweets set social media buzzing for hours. It was the last tweet that got everyone in their feelings. The outspoken DJ swore at everyone who trolled him, saying: “M*uni yenu Nonke.” The hashtag #Nonke stuck with many and we see it even today used a lot on social media. This week #Nonke even made onto popular Mzansi Magic’s telenovela, The Queen. Euphonik also has T-shirts with the hashtag and the likes of DJ Zinhle have been seen wearing it.
Babes Wodumo – “Babes”
When the self-proclaimed gqom queen emerged last year, we all took to her song Wololo which still remains a national anthem. What’s stuck however is the word “babes” which is used to refer to anything from “BabesWeDanceFloor ,” “BabesWeCooking,” “BabesWeLaughing,” to basically everything you can think of.
Somizi Mhlongo – “Wuuu Shem”
When the charming choreographer joined Idols SA, his quirky reactions to contestants got everyone tuning in. What caught on is his famous, “wuuu shem”, which many have adopted into their everyday lingo.
Riky Rick & Boyz N Bucks – “Sidlukotini,” “Cava,” “Umswenko”
The outspoken rapper and Boyz N Bucks crew which he’s part of and also includes the likes of OkMalumCoolKat and Siyabonga Ngwekanzi have drawn many of to their lingo that includes popular phrases such as, “’Sidlukotini, ” “Cava” and “Umswenko.”
