Celebrity Makeup Artist, Nthato Mashishi chats SABC 1’s Raw Silk

SABC1’s new reality show, Raw Silk is a fashion focused programme seeks to showcase the ins and outs of the world of designers. Celebrity makeup artist, Nthato Mashishi is one of the judges. He speaks more about the show.  Screen Shot 2017-02-10 at 10.50.46 Where did the name Raw Silk come from? We gave the show its name because silk is such a rare material. Designers too can attest that it’s an expensive fabric to use. Similarly then we wanted to find raw talent in terms of a designer within South Africa. We did a national search for designers and the show in its entirety is dedicated to fashion 100%. How does the show work? The designers are housed in a private setup; the show has 13 episodes and also the same number of contestants. On each episode we have a celebrity coming in as a client looking for an outfit. Each week the contestants need to sell the clothes to us judges. You’re one of three judges on the show, who are the two? I’ll be judging alongside Ole Ledimo from the successful House of Ole and with fashion guru, Yasmin Furmie. Is the show a local extension of America’s Project Runway? No, it’s an entirely new local show and one of its kind in the continent. There are elements that are similar to Project Runway because it’s a fashion reality show. However Raw Silk is fundamentally edutainment and teaches designers about the business of fashion. A lot of our parents don’t know much about the fashion industry and when their children show interest in it, they are never fully supportive as they don’t see it as a profession to be taken seriously. The show then shows the depth of the industry. Why do you think SA needs a show like this? It’s aspirational and reveals the ins and outs of the fashion industry as a serious business and how it contributes to the global economy.
